Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva – Up To Par?

Last Updated on October 1, 2021

A Ribera del Duero Reserva from Trader Joe’s, but does it measure up? The Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva.

Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva - Up To Par?

100% Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Spain. The wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for 24 months and then another 12 months in bottle before release. It has 2.5 g/L of residual sugar.

The Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva is available exclusively at Trader Joe’s (in the US) and sells for $10.99. It is imported by Felix Solis Avantis USA.

From the bottle:

Variety: 100% Tempranillo (Tinta del Pais)

Tasting note: Cherry red colour with a hint of garnet. Its deep, complex aromas offer sweet-spicy notes of fruits, clove amd black pepper. The palate is clean, intense and supremely elegant. Due to the traditional winemaking process, this wine may contain sediment.

Ageing: 24 months in American and French oak barrels.

Food Pairing: Red meat dishes, roasts and game casseroles.

Serving Temperature: Serve between 16-18C.

14% Alcohol

The 2014 Pagos del Rey Condado de Oriza Reserva begins with pleasing aromas of black cherry, balsamic, licorice and spice. Tasting the smooth, medium-bodied wine reveals similar flavors to the nose. It definitely needs some time to open up to be at its best. It ends with nice touches of minerality and leather on the dry, grippy and long finish.

It’s a nice wine at just $11 and thus a Recommended Buy but I have to admit I was hoping for a bit more from a Ribera del Duero Reserva.
